Yoga Retreat Locations: Where to Practice Around the World

In short: the best yoga retreat locations are the ones that match your season, your budget and the kind of practice you want, not a single “top” country. Start with when you can travel, pick a region whose weather is good then, and choose between a teaching-focused place (an ashram or a training town) and a holiday-focused one (a beach or a rice-field retreat). Each country guide below covers retreat areas, seasons, costs and how to get there, with every travel fact dated and sourced.

Some people want to wake up to waves and practice on a wooden deck before breakfast. Others want to sit in a hall by the Ganges and learn from teachers whose families have taught for generations. Both are yoga travel, and both are wonderful. This hub helps you choose among the world’s yoga retreat locations: how to match a place to the time of year, what each region is known for, and where to read the full guide. We only publish a country guide once we have researched it, so the list grows steadily rather than all at once.

Start here: choose your place in three steps

  1. Fix your dates first. Weather shapes a yoga trip more than anything else. Tropical places have dry and rainy seasons, not four seasons, and the “green” months can be lovely and cheaper if you are ready for afternoon rain. Use the season finder below.
  2. Decide what kind of practice you want. A beginner-friendly holiday with two gentle classes a day is very different from a month of early-morning study. Our guide on how to choose a yoga retreat walks through style, level, inclusions and red flags.
  3. Read the country guide, then plan the trip. Each guide links to the matching country guide on our sister site, travelercenter.com, for visas, entry rules and wider travel planning, so you always see current entry information in one place.

Yoga retreat locations by travel region

Countries sit in travel regions so you can browse the way you think about a trip. A country can appear in more than one region; its guide always lives at the same address.

South Asia

The places where yoga’s traditions took shape. Yoga in India ranges from the ashrams of Rishikesh in the Himalayan foothills to the Ashtanga community in Mysuru and Ayurveda centers in Kerala. Guides to Nepal and Sri Lanka follow. Expect a stronger focus on study, chanting and daily routine, and plan carefully around the monsoon.

Southeast Asia

Yoga in Indonesia is mostly about Bali, where Ubud, Canggu and Uluwatu each have their own feel, with quieter options on Lombok and the Gili Islands. Thailand adds islands, Chiang Mai and meditation temples. Warm water, rice terraces and a lively community of visiting teachers make this region a favorite for first retreats.

Central America and Mexico

Yoga in Costa Rica means surf towns such as Nosara and Santa Teresa on the Pacific, a quieter Caribbean coast and short flights from much of North America. Mexico (Tulum, Oaxaca and the Pacific coast) and Guatemala (Lake Atitlan) are next. Many retreats here pair yoga with surfing or nature.

Europe

Shorter trips, countryside farmhouses and surf coasts. Guides to Portugal, Spain, Greece and Italy are on the way. Summer is the main retreat season in most of Southern Europe.

North America

For many readers the easiest trip is close to home. Our guide to yoga retreats in the United States will cover California, the Southwest, Hawaii and the Northeast, with no long-haul flight needed.

What kind of place suits your practice?

  • Beach and surf towns suit people who want yoga as part of a holiday: classes morning and evening, the ocean in between. Costa Rica’s Pacific coast and Bali’s south coast are classic examples. Look at our guide to surf and yoga retreats.
  • Ashrams and study towns suit people who want structure, philosophy and a daily routine. Read what to expect from an ashram stay before you go; the rules are part of the experience.
  • Wellness and Ayurveda stays combine yoga with treatments, food and rest. Learn the background in our guide to Ayurveda and how to judge offers in wellness retreats.
  • Meditation-centered retreats trade long asana classes for sitting practice and quiet. Start with our meditation guides and compare meditation retreats with silent retreats.
  • Training destinations are places with many teacher trainings, such as Bali, India and Costa Rica. If you want a certificate rather than a holiday, start at yoga teacher training.

How we research destination guides

Every season, cost and transport fact in a guide comes from an official tourism board, a government office or another reliable source, and carries the date we checked it. We name real places where yoga is practiced, such as Nosara, Ubud or Rishikesh, but we do not rank countries, invent “best of” lists or quote retreat prices we have not confirmed with the organizer. Entry rules change often, so for visas we link to the country guide on travelercenter.com instead of copying rules that could go out of date. Retreat, training and venue listings appear on a destination only after we have checked them; see our editorial standards for how that works.

Travel kindly

Yoga travel often takes us into places that are sacred to the people who live there: temples in Bali, the ghats of Rishikesh, family shrines in a homestay. Dress modestly at religious sites, ask before you photograph ceremonies, and learn a little about the tradition you are visiting. Our yoga philosophy guides are a good place to begin, and the yoga retreats hub covers how to prepare for your first trip.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best country for a yoga retreat?

There is no single best country. Choose by season, budget and the practice you want: beach and surf towns such as Costa Rica or Bali for a yoga holiday, India for ashrams and traditional study, and places with many trainings if you want a teacher certificate.

When is the best time to go on a yoga retreat in the tropics?

Go in the local dry season if you want reliable sunshine: roughly December to March on Costa Rica's Pacific side and April to October in Bali. Rainy months can be quieter and cheaper, with showers often in the afternoon or evening.

Do I need a visa for a yoga retreat abroad?

It depends on your passport and the country. Entry rules change often, so each of our destination guides links to the matching country guide on travelercenter.com, and you should confirm with the official government source before booking.

Why are some countries missing from the list?

We publish a country guide only after we have researched it from official and reliable sources. More guides, including Mexico, Thailand, Portugal and the United States, are being added.

Are retreats listed on destination pages verified?

Yes. Retreats, trainings and venues appear only after we have checked them with the organizer or another current source, and each listing shows the date it was checked.
