Yoga Poses by Tradition: Ashtanga, Iyengar, Sivananda, Yin and more

In short: poses grouped by the yoga styles that teach them, from Ashtanga and Iyengar to Sivananda, hatha and yin. The same posture often appears in several traditions under different names or with different instructions, and each pose page lists those names side by side.

Traditions do not share one catalogue. Ashtanga teaches set series in a fixed order; Iyengar yoga numbers variations and uses props precisely; Sivananda classes build on 12 basic postures; yin yoga holds floor shapes for minutes under its own names, such as dragon or swan. A few names even point to different poses in different schools: Ardha Chandrasana is a one-leg balance in most classes but a standing side bend in the 26+2 hot sequence. Where that happens, the pose page has a “same name, different posture” note. Read about each style in our guide to types of yoga.

Being listed under a style means the pose is part of that style’s published teaching, not that every class or retreat in that style includes it. Retreat programmes vary, so check with the organizer.
