Yoga Props and Chair Adaptations: poses by block, strap, bolster, chair and wall

In short: poses grouped by the props they use (block, strap, bolster, blanket, chair, wall), plus supported adaptations such as legs up the wall. Props are not a sign of weakness: they bring the floor closer, support joints and let you hold a pose with steady breath. Every pose page lists its easier variations, props and chair options.

  • Block: under the hands in standing poses and forward folds, under the hips in seated poses. See yoga blocks.
  • Strap: extends the arms when the hands cannot reach the feet.
  • Bolster and blankets: support for restorative and yin poses and padding for the knees. See yoga bolsters.
  • Chair: seated versions for people who cannot get to the floor easily, at a desk or while travelling. See chair yoga.
  • Wall: balance support and safe practice for inversions.

If you live with a health condition, are pregnant or are recovering from an injury, a teacher can help you choose adaptations; our guides to prenatal yoga and yoga for your circumstances go further. The chair yoga sequence and restorative sequence put the adapted poses in order.
